After the Start of the Semester:

Level-Change Requests

As space allows, students may request-level changes (e.g., from honors/AP to on-level, or vice versa); Level-change requests must be made by the dates listed below:

1st semester – Friday October 18th, 2024 at 3pm
2nd semester – Friday March 28nd, 2025 at 3pm

When making a level change, a student’s grade will be determined by either of the following options: (a) the current grade in the course from which they are transferring; (b) the grade they are able to earn by taking all the end-of-unit assessments already given in the class to which they are moving.

Course Withdrawal Deadlines

By BVSD practice, students may withdraw from a class until the dates listed below. A withdrawal appears on the transcript as a “W”; it has no impact on GPA. If a drop request is made after the dates listed below, the student will receive a failing grade for the course on their transcript.

1st semester – Friday October 18th, 2024 at 3pm
2nd semester – Friday March 28nd, 2025 at 3pm

Students can drop a class for a STUDY HALL following conversation with student, family, teacher, counselor and administrator
Forms can be picked up in the Counseling Office
After all signatures are gathered, the form is to be returned to the counselor for processing
After the deadline, students must remain in the class
**Students dual-enrolled in a JCCC class are responsible for dropping the college course based on their respective deadlines**

Canvas Support

Canvas is our Learning Management System where students access course materials, submit work, view calendars and communicate with staff.

Blue Valley's Blended Learning page provides support with setting up and navigating Canvas as a student and parent. It also includes a Parent/Family Canvas Orientation Course.

Community Service

Community Service is NOT a requirement for graduation, however, BVH takes pride in our altruistic community.

PSAT/National Merit

The PSAT is taken on the National Test Day in October at BVH
Registration and payment are completed through ParentVue and must be received by the last Friday in September
10th grade students can sit for the exam for practice
11th grade students who take the exam are eligible for scholarship consideration through the National Merit Scholarship Program
Scores are released online at the beginning of December

Visiting Campus

A key part of deciding which college to go to is finding a good fit. And a great way to get more information is to visit the colleges in person.

Of course, visiting colleges may not be possible for everyone, but it’s a good idea to make the trips, if you can. It can help you determine whether a college is the right place for you.

A campus visit is your opportunity to get a firsthand view of a college. A college catalog, brochure or website can only show you so much. To really get a feel for the college, you can walk around the quad, sit in on a class and visit the dorms.

If students are new to college research, are unsure of where they want to go, or want an efficient way to get information about a lot of programs, consider visiting a College Fair. There are many local fairs added to the list throughout the year.

Virtual Options

Many universities offer virtual visits if getting to campus is not an option. Prospective students can also find a lot of information online about colleges. The College Tour channel is a great place to find a variety of videos regarding college research and campus life.

Athletics

Students considering athletics in college need to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center.

Many colleges open their application windows in July and have scholarship consideration deadlines for November or December 1st. Late summer/early fall is the best time to get applications completed!

Student Well-Being

Blue Valley's Student Well-Being website has resources for a variety of topics for students and families.

The Kansas Support Group online database contains more than 2,500 local and national support group resources. Groups and resources can be searched by topic and/or by county. Topics include medical conditions, disabilities, relationship issues, parenting, grief, abuse, caregiving and addiction, among many others.

Mental health providers in our area can also be found on our Resource List and through the Psychology Today website.

Mental Health/Alcohol & Drug Treatment Resources

Blue Valley's Emergency Mental Health Resources can offer support for immediate mental health assistance.

For families needing assistance with substance abuse, dating or physical violence, homelessness or legal concerns, the Community Resources for Youth page lists a variety of programs/hotlines/websites.

The Kansas Support Groups database offers access to numerous organizations, treatment centers and support groups for a wide-range of issues.

Financial/Community Support for Families

United Way 211

The United Way of Greater Kansas City (UWGKC) maintains a comprehensive database of thousands of local and national community resources. You can find information on services for COVID-19, food, clothing, and shelter, as well as for more complex needs like health care, mental health, education, and employment. Contacting 2-1-1 is free and confidential. Language interpretation is available.

The district has also compiled lists of Financial Resources and Community Assistance Resources.

Suicide Prevention

988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (now known as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), and is now active across the United States.

When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing Lifeline network. These trained counselors will listen, understand how their problems are affecting them, provide support, and connect them to resources if necessary.

Blue Valley's Well-Being website includes information to recognize the signs of depression/suicide and how to access help.

Blue Valley High School has an active Sources of Strength club that uses students to educate peers on suicide prevention and to recognize their own sources of strength.

#Zero Reasons Why and #Give Me 20 are local programs that offer education and support surrounding suicide prevention.

Reach out to the Mental Health Team (counselors, social worker, school psychologist) with questions regarding these programs or how to get help.
